What does "Handmade" really mean?

In today’s world of mass production and cutting-edge technology, it seems like everything is moving faster than ever. From automated manufacturing to rapid production methods, we’re constantly searching for ways to make things quicker and more efficient.

I often hear the question: “Why don’t you just laser cut your work? It would be so much faster!” While laser cutting and other modern techniques are certainly valid forms of manufacturing, they don’t align with the essence of what I strive to create in my jewellery.

For me, handmade is not just a buzzword or a marketing tool – it’s a philosophy, a way of working, and a connection to the craft itself. The time and care I dedicate to every step of the process infuses each piece with a unique energy, something that cannot be replicated by machines. I believe the entire journey of creating a piece – from conception to completion – impacts the energy of the finished jewellery.

I use traditional silversmithing techniques, focusing on handcrafting every detail. Whether it’s handcutting, sanding, riveting, or polishing, each method I use allows me to invest more of myself into the work. Every piece is a reflection of my hands, my heart, and my love for the craft. It’s about more than just making something functional – it’s about creating something with a story, a spirit, and a personal connection.

One of my favourite parts of the process is the meditative practice of cutting each petal of a Flower of Life design. It’s a task that requires patience and focus, and it brings me so much joy. As I work, I feel a sense of calm and purpose, and I believe that energy carries over into the final piece. When you wear a piece of jewellery that’s been created with such intention, it’s not just about the look; it’s about the feeling you get when you hold it or wear it. There’s a satisfaction that comes from working with my hands, and I truly believe that sense of joy shines through in the finished piece.

While technology will continue to evolve and shape the way we create, I will always hold a special place in my heart for the truly handmade. There’s something irreplaceable about the craftsmanship, the time, and the energy that goes into every single piece I create. It’s a slow and deliberate process, but it’s one that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

The heart and soul of handmade jewellery is something that can never be replicated, and it’s that connection that makes each piece so meaningful.

  • This means so much to hear you speak about this! I am a new silversmith and I enjoy the craft or doing things with my hands. I appreciate and adore your work. I’m so pleased there are more craftspeople like myself. I am learning from watching your posts, so thank you so much.

  • This so speakers to my hart. Why do we do anything. To take material and us traditional skills to transform that material into something beautiful is a gift to the maker and the pattern.
