FAQs

Do you do custom orders?

Yes, I enjoy making Custom Orders. To begin the process, please head to the contact page for more information about getting in touch. Custom Orders generally take between 2 - 6 weeks, depending on design, materials and urgency of piece.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes, any purchases can be shipped worldwide.

How long will it take for my piece to arrive?

Please read the Shipping section for information on shipping.

How do I take care of my jewellery?

To care for your jewellery, avoid contact with all personal care products, chlorine, saltwater and excessive heat.

Precious metals may tarnish from perspiration and contact with the skin. To bring the shine back to your piece and remove the tarnish, a high quality silver polishing cloth is recommended. If there are some hard to reach areas you can use a soft bristled toothbrush with soap and warm water to give it a good clean.

As jewellery can be delicate, please store in a box or pouch when not being worn.

What kind of saw do you use?

I use a Green Lion piercing saw, and cut all of my work by hand. I find the Green Lion sawframe to be the most comfortable saw to use, and the larger surface area of the thumbscrews makes changing blades a breeze.

This sawframe is often available in the Tools section of my online store! Sign up to my mailing list to be notified when they are in stock.

What type and size of saw blades do you use?

Depending on the intricacy of the design I use anywhere between 2/0 to 6/0 size sawblade. For example, if I am cutting a design out of 1.5mm thick sterling silver, I will use a 2/0 sawblade. If I am cutting something very intricate out of 0.4mm sterling silver, I will use a 6/0 blade. The brand I prefer to use is Glardon Vallorbe Swiss Made Round Back.

Where did you get your bench pin?

I got it from a company in Australia called AJS. It is a great bench pin, I would highly recommend it or something similar, with varied sizes of cutouts. It makes hand cutting so much easier!

What gauge metal do you use?

Anywhere between 0.4mm to 1.5mm per layer, depending on the intricacy of the design.

What kind of drill bits do you use?

I use Panther (made in Germany) and Densply (made in Switzerland) drill bits. I use between 0.5mm - 1.5mm depending on the design and the size of the rivets.

Why don't you use laser cutting?

While laser cutting is a valid form of manufacturing, I believe people appreciate jewellery that is entirely handcut and crafted. I have spent years mastering traditional silversmithing techniques. This allows me to put more love into each individual piece, and will always bring me more joy than mass production.

I believe the intent and integrity of the creation process shines through in the finished piece.

How do you draw your designs onto the metal before you cut them out?

This one is possibly my best secret to jewellery making! I draw my designs onto label paper and then stick it onto the metal. Sanding the metal first helps the designs to stick to the metal. I then cut out the designs out of the metal by hand, and remove the sticker. *hint* soaking in water helps remove the sticker!

Do you do wholesale?

If you are looking at making a large order (more than 5 pieces) or if you are a gallery owner wanting to stock my work, please email me at jean.burgers@gmail.com to discuss a Wholesale Order.

What currency are the prices on your website?

The prices are in AUD. There is a drop-down menu at the top right if you would like to change to a different currency.
The currency at checkout will switch back to being shown in AUD.

Where can I get those calipers you use?

Check out the "Tools" section of my online store, where you can purchase a selection of my favourite tools, including the Golden Mean Calipers.

Do you take on apprentices?

At the moment I am not looking at taking on any apprentices.
