The winged sun is one of the oldest Egyptian symbols. It is usually a symbol of royalty, divinity and power, and can represent the soul and its eternity. It is often placed in temples as a memento to the people of their eternal nature. During the Middle Kingdom it evolved into a symbol of protection and became a popular protective amulet during the Ptolemaic Period. Because of its solar reference, it has been connected with the sun god, Ra.
I made this necklace by drawing five different designs onto sterling silver and copper, cutting them out by hand with a tiny saw, and riveting them together with sterling silver rivets. I set a small red garnet cabochon in the centre of the orb. I then hung the piece on a 45cm sterling silver chain. I used a file to engrave the lines of the feathers on the wings.
This pendant has a wingspan of 9cm and comes hung on a 45cm sterling silver chain.
