For the ancient Egyptians, the scarab beetle symbolized creation and was associated with the sun-god, Khepri, who rolled the sun across the sky every evening and emerged anew every morning.
I made this necklace by handcutting a scarab design out of sterling silver, and riveting it to a backing of ebony wood with sterling silver rivets. There is a round inlay of mother of pearl above the scarab's head. I then hung the piece on a black plaited cord.
The scarab piece is 5cm in length.
